Blogging the Journey

Ever wonder how long it would take to get from Lubbock, Texas to Lusaka, Zambia?

Me too, so I’m timing this journey door to door.

00:27:49 – Arrive at Lubbock Airport
01:07:30 – checked in and through security; start blogging

02:25:30 – Wheels up in Lubbock

03:35:00 – Landed in Dallas

08:20:00 – Leaving Dallas (flight delayed, people sitting in the wrong seats, blah blah blah…)

11:25:50 – Landed in DC; no worries with baggage, shuttle, hotel

13:58:58 – Just came back from the hotel restaurant, where I ate the best burger I’ve had in a long time, while watching the Lakers beat the Suns; a little bit upset that *not* *one* of the vending machines in this hotel work, but all in all quite content.  First leg of the journey complete.  8 hours to Ethiopia followed by 8 hours to Zambia tomorrow…

22:58:55 – Back at Dulles, getting ready to board Ethiopian Airlines to Addis Ababa…

24:48:00 – Leaving DC…

33:36:07 – On the ground in Rome.  Note to self – ask lots of questions about your itinerary when flying to Africa.  Apparently our 8 hour flight from DC to Addis Ababa, is actually an 8-hour flight to Rome, and then a 5-hour continuation to Addis Ababa.  Little more than we bargained for.  Also, we somehow got bumped from our booked seats to the very back of the plane, so it’s going to be interesting trying to make our connection…

40:11:59 – Scramble for connection to Zambia.  Ethiopian Airlines is pretty good, imo… the food and service were great as far as I’m concerned… BUT, they have really tight connection times, and when the plane leaves late on your first leg, it makes it really difficult.  Especially if you are at the back of the plane.  But we scrambled though the terminal in Addis and are now on the plane getting ready to take off to Harare, Zimbabwe and then Lusaka, Zambia (thought this was a direct flight also; again, pays to ask questions about the itinerary).  Seats on this plane are really tight…

46:44:00 – On the ground in Lusaka! Can’t wait to get out of this tight airplane seat…

50:03:53 – At Mapepe!!! More than 2 full days, door to door.  We might have gotten in a little bit under 48 hours if not for the interesting detour… maybe more about that later.  No problems in the airport though – smooth sailing through Immigration and Customs, all the bags arrived, and our ride was there.  Lots of people here at Mapepe; spending the night at a lodge until things calm down some. Exhausted… hope we don’t have jetlag too bad.

A bit long, at times uncomfortable, but all in all not bad.  Praise God for His favor throughout.
